Thematic Postcards

Prior to 1902 British postcards had, by law, to have one side reserved for the address only. Following Frederick Hartmann’s success in having his postcards with divided backs accepted by the post office, the floodgates opened and we saw an explosion of thematic postcards to suit any conceivable public taste. From this date forward there was pictorial commentary on every possible subject and, of great historical value, every aspect of how life was in the earliest part of the twentieth century.
