Harry Payne (1858 - 1927) along with his brother Arthur C.Payne produced many postcard designs of a military theme for Raphael Tuck & Sons and also for Gale & Polden. In addition in the 1880s, Harry also produced embossed scraps for the fine art publishers, Birn Brothers, again on a military theme. Although these were not postcards in the proper sense, they were of a very similar size and were a precursor to Payne and Birn Bros's eventual movement into the postcard business. There follows an example of Payne's work - a private of the East Lancashire Regiment from a postcard circa 1900:

Born in a small town near Leeds in 1864, Phil May was orphaned at the age of only nine. He did manage to find work but wasn't reliable and eventually ended up begging. But he obviously had artistic talent and soon found that he could earn money by selling his pictures of the stage celebrities of the day.

He moved to London at the age of 14 and spent some time living rough before he was able to find employment as a designer to a theatrical costumier. He also drew posters and cartoons and worked for the St Stephens Review. May moved to Australia in order to improve his health and worked for the Sydney Bulletin producing many many drawings.

Moving back to London in 1892 via Rome and Paris, May resumed his career with the St Stephens Review. Like Tom Browne he was a founder member of the London Sketch Club and produced a lot of his postcard work for Tucks. In another parallel with Browne, he also died prematurely, in 1903. He had been a heavy drinker and it is reported that due to the wasting disease that killed him, he weighed only 5 stone when he died.

Primarily published by Davidson Bros., Tom Browne was a postcard artist of some repute in the early part of the twentieth century. He had very many series published by them in the genres of comedy, advertising and Dutch scenes. Some of his most popular comedic series include Seaside, Spooning, Honeymoon and Uncle Podger.

Browne was born on Nottingham in the 1870's - it is unclear exactly when. After leaving school he was soon apprenticed to a local printers and had already begun to demonstrate his talent as a sketch artist. By 1888 he had been published in a comic paper, known as Scraps. Being a sensible sort, Browne followed up this success by completing his apprenticeship whilst moonlighting as a contributor for sketch magazines. In 1895 Browne moved to London where he soon found a considerable following for his talents in comic papers, in particular with his characters Tired Tim and Weary Willy.

In 1897 Browne used his not inconsiderable fortune to co-found a lithographic colour printing firm, Tom Browne & Co. in Nottingham. Then in 1898 he got together with several other artists, amongst them Dudley Hardy and Cecil Aldin, to found the London Sketch Club. It is interesting to note that Browne wasn't actually present at the club's inaugural meeting on 21^st February 1898 (the Club's founding date is actually 1^st April 1898). Sadly, Tom Brown died prematurely of throat cancer in 1910.

Percy Venners Bradshaw was born in Hackney in 1877. By the age of 15 he was out of school working as a clerk for an advertising company, and studying at Art School in the evening. He also sold his first illustration to The Boys' Own Paper and was transferred within the advertising company to their art department by the age of 18. He soon left their employment to become a freelance artist and was soon selling his work to the likes of Tatler, The Boys' Own Paper and of course postcard manufacturers / publishers. Bradshaw's postcard work is most associated with the Tuck Company and Misch.

Bradshaw died at the ripe old age of 87 in 1965 not so very long after relinquishing control of his Press Art School, which he had founded in 1905.

Louis William Wain was born in Clerkenwell, Central London on 5 August 1860. His mother was French - hence the name Louis and his father was a textile trader and embroiderer. Louis was the eldest child of six, and the only male. Due his having a cleft lip, his parents kept him away from school until he was 10 - even then he spent a great deal of time playing truant from school - wandering around London. He did, however, spend some time at the West London School of Art where he eventually taught for a while.

He soon left this position though, and began to earn through his artistic abilities, by drawing animals and country scenes. From the age of 20, when his father died he was left to support his mother and sisters. At the age of 23 he married Emily Richardson, his sisters' governess and 10 years his senior. Sadly, Emily soon contracted cancer and was to die three years later, but it was during his time nursing her that Louis found his artistic niche. He would teach their cat tricks to amuse his wife and eventually began to draw sketches of it.

In Christmas 1886 Wain had pictures of anthropomorphised cats published in the Illustrated London News. At this stage they were still on all fours and without human expression, but they were engaged in speech making, holding balls and the like. Later on, his cats began to walk upright, visit the opera or go fishing.

Following a trip to New York, during which his mother died, Louis began to suffer from schizophrenia - coincidentally, his popularity began to fade. In 1923, he found himself in the paupers' ward of a Metropolitan asylum but was rescued from here following a report in the Times. He eventually ended up in the Napsbury Hospital near St Albans where he died in 1939.

Frederick "Fred" Spurgin 1882-1968 was a postcard illustrator of some repute. He was especially prolific during WWI, producing many patriotic postcards. He also produced many designs featuring children and comic designs too.

Before WWI Spurgin's designs were mostly comic in nature, from seaside scenes - he was a contemporary of Donald McGill - to policemen, tramps and others. Like McGill, the war allowed him to use his obvious comedic talent to great effect with some famous propaganda or military postcards, although he also continued to exhibit his sense of humour during this time too.

Following the war, Spurgin reverted back to type, again producing some fine humorous designs. However, with the decline of the postcard as the popularity of Alexander Graham Bell's invention increased, Spurgin's career as a postcard illustrator petered out somewhat as he progressed to illustrating books.

Clapsaddle, Ellen

Born Ellen Hattie Clapsaddle on 8 January 1863 in New York State, Ellen Clapsaddle was one of, if not the most prolific postcard and greeting card artist of her era. Her ability to draw was noticed from a very early age and was encouraged accordingly by her parents and teachers. She studied at the Cooper Institute in NY for two years from 1882 before returning home to begin her career of teaching art from home.

After the death of her father in 1891 Ellen moved with her mother to live with her Aunt. She lived there for 14 years teaching art and also creating and selling artwork of various descriptions. In 1905 whilst Ellen was working in Germany for the International Art Company her mother died. After returning home in 1906, Ellen was hired by the Wolf Company and was soon to became their sole artist. She was again in Germany working for the Wolf brothers in August 1914 at the start of WWI and despite the US not being involved initially, was unable to leave Germany.

She had invested considerable amounts of her own money in the German firm with which she was working and when they went bust during the war (much of their trade was with the English speaking world) her own finances suffered to such an extent that they could never recover. The Wolf Company also went out of business, but at the end of the war one of the brothers journeyed to Germany to bring Ellen home.

She was in an extremely poor state of health but despite their own financial difficulties the Wolf brothers looked after Ellen. On their deaths Ellen was left penniless and alone and mentally incapacitated, to die in the Peabody Home in New York on 7 January 1934, the day before her 71^st birthday.

Raphael Kirchner (1876-1917) was an Austrian illustrator whose erotic 'pin up' sketches proved popular during WWI on both sides of the trenches.

Born in Vienna in 1876, Kirchner attended the Akademie der Bildenden Kunste in the city. At the turn of the century he moved to Paris where he remained until the outbreak of war in August 1914. At this point Kirchner moved to the United States.

Kirchner produced in excess of a thousand postcards during his short life. His "Geisha" series was reprinted four times resulting in a total of 40,000 copies, making it his most popular.

Although he was responsible for a wide variety of postcards he was chiefly renowned during the war for his erotic illustrations, probable forerunner to the later phenomenon of 'pin up' girls. Raphael Kirchner died aged just 41 on 2 August 1917 in New York.

McGill, Donald

Donald Fraser Gould McGill, (January 28, 1875 - October 13, 1962) was a graphic artist who became synonymous with a whole genre of ‘saucy’ postcards, which were sold mostly in small stores in British coastal towns.

His designs comprised mainly of attractive young women; larger, older women; drunken old men; couples and priests. He was called ‘The king of the saucy postcard’, and nowadays his work is collected and appreciated for its artistic competence, its power of social observation and earthy humour.

He lost a foot in a rugby accident at school and having studied at Blackheath Proprietry School, spent the major part of his life at 5 Bennett Park, Blackheath, SE3.

Accidental Career

He was a naval draughtsman until his career in postcards began, almost by accident, when in 1904 an in-law encouraged him to draw after having seen a card McGill had made for a sick nephew. Within a year it was his full-time trade.

Even at the height of his fame McGill only commanded three Guineas per design, but today originals can fetch thousands of pounds. His distinctive designs are awash with bright, bold colours and he arranged his output according to their vulgarity soft, average and strong, with strong being much the best-sellers!

He married the daughter of the owner of Crowder’s Music Hall in Greenwich and they had two girls, who maybe didn’t appreciate their father’s occupation! He said of them that, ‘They ran like stags whenever they passed a comic postcard shop’.

During the First World War McGill turned his attentions to producing anti-German propaganda, obviously in the form of postcards! In 1941 George Orwell wrote an essay entitled, ‘The Art of Donald McGill’, but had to confess that he was not sure if McGill was really a person or simply a trademark.

MacMillan Purge

McGill suffered censure during the MacMillan ‘purge’ on smut and innuendo and lost an important test case held in Lincoln on 15 July, 1954. His work was deemed to contravene the Victorian Obscene Publications Act (1857). McGill was fined £50 and ordered to pay £25 costs.

One of the postcard prosecutions involved McGill's 'Hard Rock' saucy design. This depicted a fully dressed male cartoon character holding a giant stick of rock between his legs, pointing up towards the sky, with a few non-revealing bathing suited characters in the background, and the words at the top of the postcard were 'A Stick of Rock, Cock?'

The broader result was a devastating blow to the saucy postcard industry. Many postcards were destroyed and retailers cancelled orders. Surviving as they did on very small margins, several of the smaller companies were made bankrupt.

Attwell, Mabel Lucie

Mabel Lucie Attwell (4 June 1879 - 5 November 1964) was a British children's illustrator, best known for her cute, nostalgic drawings of children. She based these drawings on her daughter, Peggy. In addition to postcards, Attwell's work featured on advertisements, posters, books and figurines. She was extremely well thought of by her peers, and J.M. Barrie made a personal request for her to illustrate a gift copy of Peter Pan in 1921.

Attwell was the sixth child of butcher, Augustus Attwell, and his wife, Emily-Ann. Although she attended art classes at Regent Street and Heatherley's Art Schools, Attwell demonstrated a non-conformist attitude through her dislike of still-life drawing and classical subjects. She therefore left to develop her own interest in imaginary subjects. Her career began in ernest when after selling work to Tatler Magazine she was taken on by the agents Francis and Mills.

In this vein, her initial career was founded on magazine illustration, which she continued throughout her life, but around 1900 she began receiving commissions for book illustration, notably for the Raphael House Library of Gift Books. Although her early works were somewhat derivative of the style of various artists of the day, such as her friend Hilda Cowham, and the Heath Robinson brothers, Attwell did develop a style of her own. From the beginning of WWI her trademark style of sentimentalized rotund cuddly infants, started its journey to ubiquity.

She married the painter and illustrator Harold Cecil Earnshaw in 1908, with whom she had a daughter and two sons. Lucie Attwell died at her home in Fowey, Cornwall, in 1964, after which her business was carried on by her daughter, Marjorie (known as Peggy). Her Annual which had been published since 1922, was continued until 1974 by extensive re-use of images, a practice established in the 1920s.
