Military postcards post 1945

Military postcards post 1945 are very much of a different hue to those from during and before the Second World War. Of course we still see postcards detailing current wars, so there's the Falklands War etc, but these later postcards take on the nature of commemorating previous wars and battles, of showcasing uniforms and regiments and hardware. As you might expect there are also a good number of postcards detailing the pomp and circumstance of the British Army in their ceremonial role.

Of course, much like WWI, the Second World War enabled the propagandists a great opportunity to practice their (dark) art. Both sides in the conflict made extensive use of the postcard to push its particular message across, both to its own people and also towards the enemy. Propaganda was described as either white, grey or black. The darker the colour, the less "upfront" the protagonist is about the source of the material. For example, the British would create anti-Hitler material, drop it over Germany with the hope that the local population would believe it to have been created by some hitherto unknown German anti-Hitler group, believe it and rise up to defeat their leader. This was "black" propaganda.

Of course depending on the phase of the war, the protagonists were keen to express their pride in their successes, so we see postcards celebrating vital victories. We also see postcards celebrating or otherwise extolling the virtues of the political and military leaders.

After the first world war things seemed to settle down, certainly in Britain, to the cosy attitudes of the pre war era. Of course we had the Depression of the 1920's and a Germany re-arming as if unnoticed by the rest of the world, but life in Britain just chugged along as it always had done.

Military postcards of the time very much followed this lead. We saw some postcards showing detail from the British Empire - especially India. There was a certain amount of focus on victories from the first world war, but in general it was back to a celebration of the ceremonial, rather than the operational.

WWI saw a great use of postcards for propaganda purposes. They were small, so easily carried and also capable of being mass produced. Both sides in the conflict, the Allies - primarily Britain, France and Russia and the Central Powers - Germany, Austria and Turkey used postcard propaganda extensively. So too did the Americans when they entered the war in 1917.

Both sides in the conflict promised that the war would be over by Christmas 1914. It is perhaps one of the more poetic tragedies that the turmoil continued for four years, destroying 4 Christmases in total.

World War One Silks were embroidered postcards produced in the main between 1914 and 1919, although production did continue until around 1923. They were most popular with British and American servicemen on duty in France and Belgium. Silks were made by French and Belgian female refugees in their homes and refugee camps.

Military postcards were probably first produced during the Boer War of 1899-1902. These were the days before TV and radio so pictorial and written communication were the order of the day. As the old adage goes, a picture paints a thousand words, the postcard really came into its own at this time, both as a record of events and also as a propaganda tool. The British used postcards as patriotic devices, whereas in Europe, especially France Germany and Russia, postcards took a decidedly anti-British tone.

Leading up to the First World War, there were various conflicts around the globe - the Russo-Japanese War probably being chief amongst them so there are some cards relating to this. Of course the British Empire needed managing and there are quite a few postcards relating to the various branches of the British Army that were involved with this.
